A new Medicare scheme is being rolled out to assist those over 65 years of age with diabetes and a chronic wound, or over 50 years if Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander. Podiatrists are able to prescribe dressings after completion of specific training.

Any chronic foot wounds are managed in a team approach. A podiatrist can assist coordinating care from footwear, pressure relief and dressing selection to antibacterial stewardship.
